Sometimes I want to use Word 2003 as a "text editor" for HTML rather than a Word processor. Specifically, I would like to configure some option setting so that Word does NOT attempt to correct my spelling or grammar, and does not display red squiggly underlines under all the text (HTML code) that it thinks I have either mis-spelled or mis-capitalized, or mis-whatever'd. How can I do this?

That and unchecking "Check grammar as you type" did the trick.

Note that this disables checking for *all* documents till you reenable it.
Two other approaches for specific documents:

1. If you want to avoid spelling and grammar marking semi-permanently,
select all the text in the document and go to Tools | Language | Set
Language and check the box for "Do not check spelling or grammar."

2. On the Spelling & Grammar tab of Tools | Options, check the boxes for
"Hide spelling errors in this document" and "Hide grammatical errors in this
document." These options can also be toggled from the menu you get when you
right-click the Spelling and Grammar Status button on the status bar.

And remember that what's true about Spell and Grammar check is true
generally. If there's any automatic feature of Word you don't like, you
can turn it off.

Or combine Suzanne's options with your entry into Styles, and when creating
HTML documents, set your HTML style to not check spelling & grammar.

By the way, you may also find this link useful:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart1.htm
Create a template for HTML coding that has the style with no language as the
default style.

PS. Word....almost always multiple ways to get the desired result....
